Game Complete - Condemned: Criminal Origins

The Good
  • First person investigation makes for amazing game mechanics
  • story puts you on the trail of a deranged serial killer
  • great character design
  • Excellent presentation.
The Bad
  • Dull level design (if your not running around in circles looking for the next area your constantly looking behind you to see if an enemy is sneaking up on you
  • Not to clear on main character's "powers" (why he has them)
  • some kind of supernatural/evil being stalking player (no explanation)
The Ugly
  • combat very limited and repetitive much worse than super smash bros
Scariest Moments :  Mall mannequins, Mr. Tibbits, Man pops out from landing

Condemned: Criminal Origins  is a psychological horror video game, published by SegaThe game uses a first person perspective. Condemned places an added emphasis on melee combat and puzzle solving, including searching for fingerprints and gathering evidence.
You play as Agent Ethan Thomas, an F.B.I. agent assigned to the Serial Crimes Unit. As such, you spend most your time tracking down serial killers and crazy druggies going insane from some "supersonic" sound wave. The game opens as you investigate a murder scene set up by a killer known as the Match Maker. Soon after you arrive, strange things begin to happen around you, and you'll suddenly find yourself framed for the murder of two F.B.I. agents. Your only option is to track down the real killer and clear your name.
as you play you collect dead/dying birds and pieces of scrape metal to unlock achievements and its a lot of running around in circles hoping some guy doesn't sneak up behind you while your trying to sneak behind the next guy. the main satisfaction i got from this game was the fact that certain points of the game you completely stopped being a bad ass with a pipe you broke off the wall and look for clues to progress the story. Unfortunately, you're always told when to pull out your forensic tools and it's predetermined which tool you're going to use. It's still cool in some of the sequences to uncover evidence that leads to the confirmation of certain facts, but it would have been way better if you were free to search around on your own accord instead of having to follow someone else's rules. The game even goes so far as to include directional arrows on your tools that point to exactly where you need to look. Even though you can only pull out certain tools in certain areas, they're still neat tools and produce cool graphical effects. You'll get UV and laser lights, a digital camera, a 3D scanner, a Gas Spectrometer and a Sampler. How exactly they're able to transmit data to Rosa so fast is unknown, but it can be ignored for the sake of making the game playable. Nobody wants to play a game where you need to wait two to three days for express shipping every time you find a new bit of evidence.

Condemned: Criminal Origins Pictures, Images and PhotosEvery now and then you go thru moments of insanity (no clue why cause they don't really go into detail whats going on except between levels they tell you something is going on with the dead birds your collecting and your supposed to have some kind of connection to that) There are also special graphical effects that accompany your breaks in sanity. When you're about to have a psychotic episode or premonition, the screen will be blanketed in a grain filter. You'll soon after suffer from hallucinations and see shadows and strange shapes of characters flitting just beyond the periphery of your vision, much like in F.E.A.R. You'll need to stay alert in these sequences since in some of them you're attacked by horrible looking foes that can deal actual damage to you. The hallucinations are yet another example of how this game is able to draw you in and (supposed to) scare the crap out of you.

There were only three spots in the whole game that scared me and all three of them were cheap jump scares
Scary!

Scarier!

Scariest!

and no i didn't get those out of order when your playing this game in the dark and the mood is just right you can end up shitting your pants on that last one. mr tibbits.... that one is expected the moment she tells you to do a close up i knew what was going on . the mannequins are the creepiest you walk in and they just appear behind you. BUT THE LEDGE!!!!!!!!! let me set the scene.....your walking around after you just killed several bad guys, no one is around its dark your constantly hearing something move behind you, so you keep looking behind you.....nothing is there. then you come around a corner and its quiet....to quiet then you think "i know something is gonna come running up im gonna check over here just to be suuuUUUUURRRRR OMG WHAT THE FUCK *SWING* *SWING* *SWING* OH GOD DIE!!!!! ohhh god *breathing heavy* this game is fucked up" and for the rest of the game your wondering what's gonna jump out when your climbing a ladder or looking down a hole....but nothing happens.

Condemned: Criminal Origins Pictures, Images and Photos

So in the long run Condemned: Criminal Origins is a real fun game to play but its not that scary there are a lot of things that pop out but halfway thru you get used to it and everything  gets repetitive. the investigation parts were the saving grace of the game but it could be expanded. There is a sequel Condemned 2: Bloodshot that i haven't played yet (so maybe ill play it at a later date) and a lot of things i don't like may be fixed but ill have no clue of knowing till i play. Time to move on to the next creepy game!

Creature Feature: Kuchisake Onna

http://www.scaryforkids.com/pics/japanese-legends.jpg

Kuchisake Onna (lit. "slit-mouth woman") is a monster from Japan. Her defining characteristic is her mouth, which extends from ear to ear in a horrible, permanent smile. who brandishes a large scissors and preys on children. As the story goes, a samurai mutilated his lover in a jealous rage in order to destroy her beauty. She became a vengeful spirit, and nowadays can sometimes be found wandering the streets wearing a surgical mask. Japanese people often wear such masks during the cold season to prevent others from catching their colds, so Kuchisake Onna does not particularly stand out in a crowd.

Kuchisake Onna

Should you meet Kuchisake Onna, she'll likely ask you if you think that she is beautiful. Apart from her surgical mask, she does appear to be a very beautiful woman, and anyway, most people say "yes" automatically to be polite. However, upon receiving a positive response, Kuchisake Onna will tear her mask off and show you her awful mouth, slit on each side all the way up to her ears. She will then ask you again if you think she is beautiful. Those who answer "no" or try to run away will be chased down. Kuchisake Onna can apparently run 100 meters in 3 seconds (thats like 75 mph!), and she usually carries a knife or scythe.

Picture the scene. You are walking home from school and your path takes you down a deserted city street. Suddenly, you hear a faint noise coming from the shadows. You glance over and see a beautiful woman standing there. She has long black hair and is wearing a beige trenchcoat. A surgical mask covers the lower half of her face. In Japan, wearing a surgical mask is not uncommon during flu season, to prevent spreading germs.
She steps out of the shadows and blocks your path.
“Am I beautiful?” she asks.
Before you can answer, she tears off her mask, revealing a hideously deformed face. Her huge mouth is sliced from ear to ear and gapes open revealing rows of sharp teeth and a big red disgusting tongue twisting and twirling inside.
“Am I beautiful NOW?” she screams.
Terrified, you struggle to answer her. If you say “No”, she pulls out a huge pair of scissors and kills you immediately, chopping off your head. If you say “Yes”, she takes her scissors and slices your mouth from ear to ear, making you look just like her. If you try to run away, she will hunt you down and kill you, by slicing you in two.
slit mouth woman drawing Pictures, Images and PhotosAnother way to escape from Kuchisake Onna is to give a non-committal answer. If you say “You look average” or you look normal, she will be confused, giving you just enough time to run away. Men will be killed immediately, while women have their mouths cut, creating a new Kuchisake Onna. Depending on the version of the tale, the only way to escape is to tell the Kuchisake Onna that she is beautiful the second time, or to distract her with fruit or candy.
There are many rumors about how Kuchisake Onna got her horribly disfigured mouth. Some say that her slit mouth is the result of plastic surgery that went horribly wrong. Others say that she was injured in a terrible car crash. Some even believe she is an escaped mental patient who was so demented that she cut her own mouth apart.
According to one legend, years ago, in Japan, there lived a very beautiful woman who was extremely vain and self-absorbed. Her husband was a very jealous and brutal man and he became convinced that she was cheating on him. In a fit of rage, he took a sword and slit her mouth from ear to ear, screaming “Who will think you’re beautiful now?” She became a vengeful spirit, and began wandering the streets of Japan, wearing a surgical mask to hide her terrible scars.
The Slit Mouth Woman’s reign of terror began in the spring and summer of 1979, when rumors began to spread throughout Japan about sightings of the Kuchisake-onna hunting down children. The story spread like wildfire and actually created scares in many towns. Police increased their patrols and schools sent teachers to walk students home in groups.

In 2004, South Korea was plagued by reports of a red-masked woman who was chasing children.

In 2007, a coroner found some old records from the late 1970s about a woman who was chasing little children, but was hit by a car, and died shortly after. Her mouth was ripped from ear to ear.

The USA has its own version of Kuchisake Onna. There were rumors about a clown who appeared in public bathrooms and accosted children, asking “Do you want death or happy smile?” if they chose “happy smile”, he took out a knife and slit their mouths from ear to ear.

As with many Japanese horror tales, this one is recursive: women who are accosted by Kuchisake Onna can themselves become monsters if they answer her question incorrectly. Apparently there was a wave of Kuchisake Onna rumors in 1979 in Japan. More recently, 1994 film about Kuchisake Onna modernized the tale by making her disfiguration the result of a plastic surgery mishap. Another film of the same name released in 2007. There's more to read about Kuchisake Onna at The Youkai Mura and Wikipedia.

The following is a witness's rencounter of their incident with The Slender Man

After waking up with a jolt, the girl laid in bed a few seconds longer. Reaching over to switch on her bedside lamp, she tried to remember exactly what had stolen her sweet slumber away. When she couldn’t, the brunette swung her legs over the side of the bed and heaved herself up. Checking the time on her phone, she snorted when she saw it was midnight; the witching hour. Knowing that sleep would only evade her, she left her bedroom for the kitchen, a good cup of coffee on her mind. As she passed by her front door, a chill spread like liquid fire down her spine. It’s only Winter, she told herself, focusing again on the coffee plan. Measuring out scoops, water, and preparing her cup kept her occupied, but as the dark liquid boiled, she had nothing left to keep her mind from wandering off. The chill returned and she couldn’t help but glance behind her to the front door. It stood there innocently enough, just like always. The deadbolt was still in place and she could see nothing amiss with it. Turning back to her coffee, she did her best to forget about the feeling. With her cup in hand, she started back towards her bedroom. As she walked by the front door, she decided that a quick glance out of the peep hole would help calm her restless thoughts. The chill worsened with each step she took towards the door and further away from the safety and warmth of her blankets. She pressed her empty hand against the cold, metal door and took a deep breath before leading her eye to the peep hole. At first, she could only see an inky blackness and somehow seemed to swirl in itself. When she blinked in surprise, the void melted away. She wished it hadn’t. In it’s place, there stood what she could only guess was once a man. The limbs were long and inhumanly awkward, with bulky joints branching off into several arms, not unlike the branches of a tree. The creature was draped in a black suit, somehow making the thing more nightmarish to her. The icing on the proverbial cake, however, was what passed as the hellish thing’s face. It was as though her mind blurred the ghastly visage to spare itself further shock and horror.  She shoved herself away from the door with the hand still pressed against it. The scalding mug of coffee fell, the liquid burning her bare legs as she fell backwards and tried to crawl away from the door. She knew, somehow, that her mind hadn’t been playing tricks on her. As she crab walked away from the door, she watched as tendrils as black as the void itself snake around through the cracks. The girl was trapped between the instinct to flee and the gut feeling to not turn her back on the door. When the door jolted, the urge to flee overcame her and she slipped in the burning liquid as she tried to make it back to her room. She knew deep down that she was trapping herself in a corner, but she had to get away from the door. The girl was halfway down the hallway when she heard the previously locked door creak open. She screamed and slipped into a wall, cracking her chin on it and stunning her. After that, there was only blackness. - “Nicole?” a warm, male voice snapped the woman out of her trance. As she turned around, she was met by one of her sister’s doctor’s. She nodded, not sure if she should say anything, or even if she could find her voice if she did have something to say. That morning, she had gotten an urgent phone call from the hospital, saying that her sister, Lindsay, was there. Before they had even let her see her, the doctor’s had pulled her off to the side and insisted that they talk to her about what might have happened. Phrases like ‘self-inflected’ and ‘assault’ had been thrown around and Nicole felt her mind reel. She still hadn’t fully understood what they had been saying until she saw Lindsay with her own eyes. Her little sister had a bandage wrapped around her head, covering both of her ears as well as her eyes. They said it was to keep her now deadened eyes from drying out and to try to keep infection out of the wounds Lindsay had made to her ears. The doctors had guessed that either she or someone else had jammed a pencil into them to keep her off balance or to deafen herself against something. There was the mix of first and second degree burns on her hands, legs, and feet, from what was assumed to be the coffee her neighbors found slipped all over the entry to her apartment. As Nicole walked into her sister’s hospital room the first time, she thought she had spied the silhouette of a man in the window. That, she knew, was impossible. Her sister’s room was on the third story of the hospital.

My Mission

Photobucket

I love scaring people and video games. I like the idea of an action/adventure game that integrates fighting, exploration, puzzle solving, and a story. I must admit that I am also partial to horror as a story genre, probably thanks to the vast number of horror movies I consumed in my youth. As with horror cinema, survival horror games are usually quite bad. When a good one comes along, however, it's worth its weight in gold. and that is what I'm hoping to create.

To tell you the truth, my real interest lies in games that are adept at eliciting an emotional response from the player. I think that video games have the potential to be a medium that can effectively convey emotion (as books and film do with such immense power), but at the moment most game design is mired a technological arms race. The death march toward ever better technology has caused the actual content of video games--the parts that make games fun and maybe even meaningful--to stagnate. However, there are a small number of games released each year that are designed with the sole purpose of manipulating the player's emotions, and most of these games fall within the horror genre. I am playing horror games and documenting my findings not just because I enjoy the horror genre, but because I think the lessons that the designers of these games learn will eventually be applicable to a much wider range of games.

On this blog you will find my attempts to catalog my findings on scary/horror games i am playing/completed, complete with review scores, notes, and screenshots, also random photos and stories that i have found to be terrifying. My goal is to find out what scares people and create an expanded story line, create a truly horrifying video game and from that experience create a set of guidelines for future game developers.

Now, here is the part where you come in. Im generating this database from my personal knowledge and fairly extensive internet searching. However, I have no doubt there is a vast collection of knowledge that i have yet to uncover If you find anything that fits my collection let me know and i will add it to my data base and expand from there.

About the Quest
When I first decided to make make the scariest game ever made, I foolishly planned to jump right into it and start making it but "one does not simply walk into mordor" I quickly realized that i was in over my head. In order to give myself some chance of actually completing this quest, I decided to focus on these specific things:
1. If it scares me it goes in the blog no question asked!(which is hard)
2. Nothing is taboo (i will offend someone but gross is not scary)
3. When completing a game post what was good bad ugly and most terrifying moment.
4. When posting pictures minimum of 10-15 pics and include one scary story.
5. Creepy < Scary = True < Inspired
